Finishing touches: Workmen put the finishing touches to the giant sculpture outside the Hayward Gallery

If you thought foxes were only a small problem in London, then this giant straw sculpture may make you think again.

Workmen are putting the finishing touches to the baleful addition to the capital's South Bank, where it is one of the highlights of an exhibition celebrating the 60th anniversary of the 1951 Festival of Britain.

The summer's 'nostalgic celebration of Britishness' will feature cultural and creative events including recreating a beach by the riverside with artistic beach huts.

As well as the seaside, there will be rides at a vintage-inspired funfair, snacks at a retro fish and chip van, and a new bandstand - while the massive fox will take centre stage alongside water fountains in a 'reimagined landscape of the British countryside'.

Other events at the Southbank Centre will include a choral weekend, and talks by some of Britain’s leading artists and thinkers.

Highlights included Tracey Emin’s first major survey show in London at the Hayward Gallery, plus appearances by chef Heston Blumenthal, singer Billy Bragg, actress Meera Syal and politician Tony Benn.

The events run from this Friday until September 4, 2011 at London's Southbank Centre.
