Alive! 200ft cliff plunge miracle of Oscar and his master

When Oscar the labrador fell 200ft over a cliff edge during a coastal walk, his owner’s first instinct was to follow him.

But as he looked over the sheer drop to try to work out how to reach his pet, the 53-year-old was caught by a gust of wind and blown over himself.

Miraculously, both dog and master survived with little more than broken bones.

Police said it was ‘absolutely remarkable’ that the man, who has not been named, suffered only a broken leg and wrist, while Oscar escaped with a broken leg, broken tooth and black eye.

The man and his wife, from Rochdale, were walking their three dogs at Cloughton Wyke, near Scarborough, on Monday afternoon when Oscar fell over the edge of the cliff.

While the man was desperately trying to work out how to get to his pet, he lost his balance and fell too.

His wife dialled 999 and a search and rescue helicopter from RAF Leconfield took the man to hospital – before returning to collect Oscar with a type of stretcher usually reserved for small children.

Veterinary surgeon Heather Westron, who was called out to the rescue, said Oscar would need a leg operation but was expected to make a full recovery.
